Share of green electricity in the consumption of the Region

Renewable energy corresponds to energy whose exploitation does not deplete “stocks” (solar radiation, wind power, heat from the earth, flow of rivers, tides of the sea). For the environment, the main benefits of using renewable energy are the reduced use of fossil fuels and the limitation of the associated emissions. Opting for renewable energy, therefore, contributes to the initiatives aimed at meeting the Kyoto Protocol, but also the other commitments the Region has made at the European and international level to reducing greenhouse gas emissions after 2012.

With this aim in mind and to increase the autonomy of the European Union in the field of energy, the objective of the Directive 2009/28 / EC is to cover 20% of the primary needs for power with renewable energy by 2020. The efforts to be made were distributed among the Member States according to their characteristics; the target for Belgium is to ensure that 13% of the final gross consumption of energy comes from renewable energy sources. However, the priority remains to reduce total energy consumption (which, incidentally, would allow us to reach this target of 13%, provided that the use of renewable energy does not undergo a similar reduction).

Brussels And Renewable Energy

The territory of the Brussels Capital Region is small and densely populated. The possibilities for the production of renewable energy in this area are therefore insufficient and should focus on:

  • mainly solar power on the roofs of buildings;
  • geothermal energy (except the use of hot springs, since the Region does not have shallow thermal sources) and the use of the heat pump (the recent trend);
  • the wind, on the understanding that there is not an area available that lends itself to the installation of windmills with a large capacity (minimal potential).

On the other hand, the Brussels Region imports renewable energy sources:

  • Biomass burned (with energy recuperation/production of electricity), originating from the waste of households and businesses. This garbage is a residual product of mainly imported consumer goods;
  • Dry biomass (wood, pellets,), used for heating purposes. This nevertheless poses an air quality problem in an urban environment;
  • Liquid biomass (biofuels used in transport and combined heat and power);
  • Electricity of renewable origin.

The available data now relate to the percentage of green voltage about the total amount of heat sold in the Region. Green electricity should not be confused with a power of renewable origin in the strict sense of the word because green electricity also includes voltage produced by biomass, gas or in installations with quality combined heat and power. The share of green electricity is estimated by the labels of origin guarantee that are submitted by the various electricity suppliers to BRUGEL (regulator of the energy markets in the Brussels-Capital Region).
